‘Garden Culture along the VIA REGIA’ roadside the VIA REGIA in the eastern Thuringian Basin is the initiative of the owners of the rural estate ‘refugium’. The aim is to transform two farms, yard and 7.500 m2 of garden into a place of meeting and inspiration. In doing so, garden culture is to be retained and encouraged with all of its aspects. Furthermore, the ancient but now overgrown VIA REGIA that directly runs along the farm, is to be exposed involving the whole village. It is intended to emerge a place of meetings, memories, cross-generational learning, arts, healing, reflection and self-discovery.
In 2013 ‘refugium’ was honoured with the Thuringian Architectural Award and the Thuringian Landscape Architectural Award.
