Hidden Places along VIA REGIA
Photo and video exhibition in the Glass Box of the University Erfurt

The exhibition „Hidden Places“ has developed from a workshop of young artists and creative people from towns along the VIA REGIA which was held in summer 2009 in Görlitz-Zgorzelec. The basic idea of the project was the ancient royal road VIA REGIA as historical communication axis between East and West from Kiev up to the Atlantic coast. This road stands for mobility, exchange, inspiration and is a symbol of the unifying Europe. The German-Polish Görlitz-Zgorzelec defines itself as European city that owes its former prosperity to its central location along the VIA REGIA. Today the city gains power by the close neighbourhood of two cities belonging to different EU-countries and is unique architectural monuments that fascinate and inspire every visitor. This city is the nucleus of the exhibition “Hidden Places”.
The term Hidden Places stands for places not arising on the front page of catalogues, travel guides or advertising brochures, but representing hidden less famous expressions of European culture. The exhibited creative works show people trying to adopt to their everyday situation or even try to escape from it. There are pictures on mutual relations of two nations with different history and unsolved problems existing since generations. There are symbols of recent years in connection to the actual environment, stories of sadness and isolation but also stories full of wisdom, secrets and tales.
